    GYUMRI, SHIRAK MARZ - On October 10, 2009, the USAID-funded Competitive Armenian Private Sector (CAPS) Project held a seminar on “Marketing and Sales in the Hospitality Business” in the city of Gyumri. The seminar was facilitated by Dr. Mahmood A. Khan, Ph.D., Professor at the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management at one of the most prestigious American educational institutions - the Virginia Tech / Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

    YEREVAN - The Union of IT Enterprises and the Enterprise Incubator Foundation organized the fifth annual DigiTec Expo 2009 on October 2-4 in Yerevan with support from Ucom, ADC, Virage Logic and USAID’s Competitive Armenian Private Sector (CAPS) Project. Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan and the Head of Eastern Europe and Central Asia branch at Ericsson, Jan Campbell, marked the opening of the exhibition.

    ABOVIAN, KOTAYK MARZ - On October 8, 2009, the Armenian EyeCare Project (AECP) medical team visited the Abovian penitentiary for women to help those with limited access to eye care on the occasion of the World Sight Day, celebrated each October as a public awareness initiative to draw attention to blindness prevention worldwide.

    YEREVAN, ARMENIA – On September 29, 2009, the USAID Competitive Armenian Private Sector (CAPS) Project, the American University of Armenia Extension Program, and the Armenian Restaurant Association launched the “ServSafe: Essentials of Consistent Food Safety” certification program in Yerevan. A three-day training course was held for representatives of Armenia’s food service industry to assist in setting high food safety standards.

    YEREVAN, ARMENIA - On September 28, 2009, the Freedom of Information Center of Armenia (FOICA) through USAID support organized the Freedom of Information Annual Award Ceremony at Regineh Hotel in Yerevan. This annual event, organized by FOICA since 2003 with the purpose of promoting transparency and good governance in Armenia, was devoted to the International Right to Know Day set aside in 2002 by a group of freedom of information advocates around the world.

    GOSHAVANK, TAVUSH MARZ – On September 25, 2009, the Armenian Monuments Awareness Project (AMAP) NGO, the Ministry of Culture of Armenia and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) Armenia, with the joint sponsorship of the USAID Competitive Armenian Private Sector (CAPS) project, VivaCell-MTS and the Honorary Consulate of Italy in Gyumri, held the presentation of new multilingual visitor information panels at Goshavank Monastery in Armenia’s northern Tavush marz.

    TSAKHKADZOR, KOTAYK MARZ - The Third Annual Community Civic Action Conference commenced in Tsakhkadzor on September 23 within the framework of the USAID Youth and Community Action Program (YCAP). The opening session was attended by U.S. Ambassador Marie L. Yovanovitch, representatives of USAID/Armenia, the Academy for Educational Development, Freedom of Information Center of Armenia, Internews, local NGOs and members of the 80 YCAP communities from all 10 marzes of Armenia.

    YEREVAN, ARMENIA - On September 9, 2009, the USAID Financial Sector Deepening Project (FSDP) and the Armenian Credit Reporting Agency (ACRA) held a ceremony in Erebuni Plaza Hotel in Yerevan to mark the completion of FSDP’s assistance to the Agency. Attendees to the ceremony included Arthur Javadian, Chairman of the Central Bank of Armenia (CBA), John Seong, USAID/Armenia Acting Mission Director, Artak Arzoyan, ACRA CEO and others.

Guest speakers at the event included First Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Issues Araïk Petrosyan, USAID/Armenia Acting Mission Director John Seong, AECOM International representative Elly Preotle and SPSS Chief of Party Jane Daly.
